"The Facebook Generation" and Social Networking

After reading "The Facebook Generation", I thought about social networking and how it impacts our lives.  As a college student, mother, wife, friend, and employee, I understand different aspects of facebook and social networking.  I use facebook for many different reasons.  I use it to connect with highschool friends, family members (that live close and far away), collegues and of course college friends and classmates.  However, as a mother and wife, I do not have lots of free time to log onto facebook and search for long lost friends. Also, my information on my page is limited, most of it private because I share photos with family members and friends that I do not see often.

I enjoy having a facebook page because it allows me to connect with people I would normally not have the opportunity to.  I like that I choose what is put on my page and who can view it.  I keep all my photos private and only allow close friends and family to view them.  I keep my personal information private and wouldn't share phone numbers or addresses over the internet at all.

I know that facebook and other social networking rules highschool and college life and can see how it affects students academics.  I had a professor say once, "Log onto D2L, like you would your facebook page."  That was an eye opener about how much time a person can spend on facebook.  I believe sites like facebook do affect how people communicate with one another.  For example, my 14 year old sister has facebook and spends the majority of her time on the internet on sites like facebook, myspace, my yearbook and you tube.  I have seen first hand that she will do and say things that she wouldn't normally say to someone because it's hard to get embarrassed online.

Facebook and other social networking has positive and negative qualities.  I think it depends how a person utilizes the site will determine how it affects their relationships, grades and lives.
