Functional vs Dysfunctional Families
I think that every family has elements of both function and dysfunction. A functional family is one that works for everyone not just one member. No family is perfect but a functional family works and the members feel loved, valued and recognized. Families need to have good communication skills and communicate effectively. Each member should feel like they have a voice and their feelings will be heard. I believe that families try to create a comfortable, safe environment for all members. Parents try to maintain the environment and provide a "good" home for their children without being over aggressive, domineering, but are still in control of their household. Parents need to be attentive, observant and protective of their children. Many of these things can help a family be functional and meet everyones needs successfully. Some dysfunctional families lack good communication and the ability to create a comfortable environment. They may not express their wants and needs effectively which could cause issues. Dysfunction in families could also be a disorganized family. Families that are not organized or have a set of family rules may be chaotic. I believe that every family has a little dysfunction but most have a system that works for each family.
